Closed Captioning on YouTube

On August 28, 2008, YouTube, a video sharing website where users can upload, share and view video clips, posted an announcement on its blog stating that Internet users posting to YouTube will now be able to close caption their videos. The blog states that: "[W]e´ve added a new captioning feature which allows you to give viewers a deeper understanding of your video. Captions can help people who would not otherwise understand the audio track to follow along, especially those who speak other languages or who are deaf or hard of hearing." The blog post provides easy to follow instructions on how to caption videos, including instructions on how to create multiple captions and captions in multiple foreign languages. YouTube provides over 120 languages from which to choose. Activating the close captioning is also straightforward: A viewer clicks on the menu button on the bottom right of the video screen and then chooses the "CC" option provided.
